Business, Industry & Agriculture

Agriculture is the leading industry in Bourbon County as it is in the state of Kentucky.  According to Glenn F. Mackie, Bourbon County Extension Agent, total cash receipts from agriculture in Kentucky as of 2000 are estimated to reach $3.65 billion.  Of that amount, Bourbon County is expected to contribute $156 million.

Eighty-six percent of the agricultural income in the county comes from livestock sales, with the majority of that provided by the horse industry.  Among Kentucky’s 120 counties, Bourbon ranks fifth in livestock receipts, twenty-second in crop receipts, and fifth in total cash receipts from agriculture.

While agricultural employment remains high, the diversified local economy contributes to the county’s lower-than-average unemployment rate.  The three largest manufacturers, CMC/CLA, Mallinckrodt-Baker, and Monessen Hearth Systems provide jobs for well over 1,000 workers.  Wholesale and retail trades provide a large percentage of jobs, as well.  *** The groundbreaking of a new Super WalMart has begun - estimated completion, November 2006!!!

With the widening of the Paris-Lexington Road, and the establishment of an 80-acre Industrial Park on U.S. 460, industrial recruitment for the future looks very promising.  Six industries have already located at the park, and there is room for several more.  See map below, or click on www.bgadd.org  ***Update:  The Paris-Bourbon County Economic Development Authority has recently purchased an additional 234 acres adjacent to the existing Industrial Park.  The new park will share the same convenient access to Highway 460, as well as sewer and water lines, and it is surrounded by beautiful farm land.

AccuTran Industries is a local sheltered workshop that provides jobs for individuals in the community who have experienced barriers to employment due to mental, physical, developmental, and substance-abuse-related disabilities.  The nearly 30-year-old company bids on jobs to bring into their workshop for their workers to do and get paid.  The workers are provided with specific job training, as well as general vocational and social training, thereby assisting them to reach their greatest potential.  (AccuTran is a Member of the Chamber of Commerce).  For more information call 859-987-4011.

The Paris-Bourbon County Chamber of Commerce works to promote a stronger local economy with several ongoing projects designed to support existing businesses and attract new ones to the area.  A regular “business spotlight” is featured in local newspapers, chamber members are listed on various publications, including the local map, and members are offered several networking opportunities, including the monthly membership meetings and “Business After Hours” gatherings.  The Chamber gives businesses a “voice” in the community.
