Government Services

One of the most important things that local governments do is to maintain a safe environment.  The government services provided by the city of Paris, which is a third-class city with a city manager/city commission form of government, and Bourbon County, which has a judge executive/magistrate system, include strong law enforcement and fire protection components.

The communities of North Middletown and Millersburg also have local governments, both utilizing the mayor/city council form of government.  While each of these governments is autonomous, they often work together to provide more efficient services for the residents of Bourbon County.

County-wide enhanced 911 emergency telephone service, which pinpoints the location of a call for help, is available as a joint effort between the city and county governments.  Other joint projects include an animal shelter built with money raised by the Paris Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.), a recycling center that accepts several types of recyclables from all county residents, a planning and zoning commission, and an economic development authority, which has developed an industrial park that is home to five industries.  More acreage is being purchased to make room for more industries to locate at this highly-desirable and convenient industrial park.

Fire protection is also a priority in the county.  There are two city and one county fire station, staffed with professional firefighters twenty-four hours a day.  The Emergency Medical Service has four ambulances with advanced life support equipment and eleven paramedics.  All of the firefighters are also trained Emergency Medical Technicians.  The city and county fire departments have mutual aid agreements so that the departments may assist each other when needed.

In addition, many of the smaller communities in Bourbon County have volunteer fire departments. Centerville, Clintonville, Hutchison, Little Rock, Millersburg, North Middletown, and Ruddles Mill/Shawhan, have volunteer fire departments.

The Paris Police Department each year holds a "Citizens Police Academy" in which everyday citizens can spend one evening per week for 10 weeks learning about the many facets of the Paris Police Department.  Topics include Firearms Training, Officer Safety, the Criminal Justice System, Narcotics, Juvenile Crime, Internal Affairs, Crime Scene Investigation, DUI, Domestic Violence and Child Abuse.  For more information or an application to join the Citizen's Police Academy, call 987-2100.
